Medical Training
Dr. Yates completed his psychiatric residency training at Banner-University Medical Center in Tucson, Arizona. At the conclusion of his second year of training, he was recognized on the Dean’s List for Excellence in Medical Student Education, as voted upon by medical students whom he had educated clinically throughout the year.
Also during residency, Dr. Yates completed a study investigating alternative models of health care delivery for individuals with Severe Mental illnesses in the city of Tucson, Arizona. The study received 2nd place at the hospital’s annual research symposium.
In addition, Dr. Yates also had the pleasure of serving for two years as the southern Arizona Resident-Fellow Representative to the Arizona Psychiatric Society, a branch of the American Psychiatric Association.
During that time, Dr. Yates was selected by his residency directors to receive the annual Resident Recognition Award for consistent demonstration of core professional values, including compassion for patients and colleagues, clinical excellence, leadership within the field of psychiatry, service to the community, and advocacy on behalf of patients and the profession of psychiatry itself.
Dr. Yates received focused training during his residency in emergency psychiatry, consult-liaison psychiatry, geriatric psychiatry, psychopharmacology, outpatient psychiatry, and several key areas of psychotherapy, including: Psychodynamic psychotherapy, time limited dynamic psychotherapy, emotion focused therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, supportive therapy, and dialectical behavioral therapy.
Educational History
Prior to studying medicine, Dr. Yates earned his Bachelor of Science degree from Arizona State University. He majored in the Biological Sciences with an added degree concentration in animal physiology and behavior, as well as a minor in business.
Coursework included genetics, cell biology, biochemistry, molecular biology, organic chemistry, inorganic chemistry, developmental biology, ecology, microbiology, animal physiology, animal behavior, human psychology, neurobiology, archaeology, anthropology, sociology, bioethics, and leadership in public and non-profit organizations.
Dr. Yates graduated summa cum laude from the Barrett Honors College after successfully defending his honors thesis, which focused on developing microbial systems to remove industrial carcinogens from human groundwater supplies.
Dr. Yates earned his medical degree at the University of Arizona College of Medicine. There, he developed a passionate interest in the intersection between the neuromuscular system, nutrition, medications, the brain, memory, and human perception of speech and emotion. During that time, he visited the Betty Ford Center on a scholarship in order to deepen his knowledge of psychiatric conditions.
Dr. Yates also served as Treasurer, and then as President of the Medical Ethics Society within the College of Medicine. He received the Leadership Award for Excellence for his contributions to the Society spanning two years.
Style of Practice
Today, Dr. Yates maintains active memberships in the Arizona Psychiatric Society, the American Psychiatric Association, and the Southwest Psychoanalytic Society.
He combines his biological and medical backgrounds with in-depth psychotherapeutic, pharmacologic, and diagnostic experience gained during his psychiatric residency. His daily practice of psychiatry is infused with perspectives gleaned from intensive studies in genetics, neurobiology, psychoanalytic and psychodynamic theories, family systems, developmental psychology, attachment theory, object relations, and the neurobiology of trauma.
Dr. Yates also enjoys supplementing these perspectives with methods of mind-body integration, ecological awareness, meditation, and mindfulness. He also offers prescriptions for leisure time in nature when clinically indicated.
Each visit with Dr. Yates begins and ends with the therapeutic relationship. His approach to clinical care is non-rushed, accessible, individualized, openminded, interested, gentle, sincere, reflective, understanding, warm, and humorous.
Personal Interests
On his free time, Dr. Yates enjoys reading, writing, listening to music, walks in nature, gardening, hiking, traveling, viewing sunsets, photographing nature, drinking teas, sampling new cuisines, and spending time with friends and family.
